If you've never ridden before, the idea of exploring a Greek island on horseback can feel a little daunting. It shouldn't. The vast majority of people who ride with us are complete beginners, and by the end of the first trail they're already asking which route to try next. Here's what to expect.
Meeting your horse
We start slowly. Before anyone gets in the saddle, you'll meet your horse, learn a little about their character, and get comfortable being close to them. Our horses are calm, sure-footed and used to first-time riders. They've walked these trails hundreds of times and know exactly where they're going.
A professional guide is with you for the entire ride. You are never asked to control the horse on your own or do anything you're not ready for. Helmets are provided, and we fit everyone properly before we set off.
Choosing the right first trail
For a first ride, we usually suggest the 30-minute loop through the old town and up to the chapel of St. Fotini, or the hour-long trail down to the little harbour of Kamini. Both are gentle, scenic and give you a real feel for riding without asking too much on day one. If you fall in love with it, and most people do, the longer climbs through the pines are there whenever you're ready.
What to bring
Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes, and bring sun protection and water. Hydra gets bright and warm, especially from late spring onwards. That's genuinely all you need. We handle everything else.
The best part of a first ride isn't the riding itself. It's the moment the town drops away below you, the only sound is hooves on the path, and you realise this is a side of Hydra most visitors never see. Come and find it.
