The Seahorse swim: riding bareback into the Aegean

Of all the trails we offer, one stands apart. The Seahorse swim is a four-hour ride across the island to the quiet bay of Palamidas, where the path runs out and the sea begins, and where, if the weather is kind, you and your horse can swim together.

The ride out

The morning starts like any of our longer trails: a steady climb away from the town, through the pines and out into the quieter interior of the island. It's a proper half-day adventure, so we take our time and stop for the views. By the time you reach the coast, you've earned what comes next.

Into the water

At Palamidas we ride bareback into the shallows. Horses are natural swimmers, and there's nothing quite like the feeling of the water rising around you as your horse wades in and begins to float. Bring your swimwear. You'll want to be in the sea for this one. Our guide stays with you throughout, in and out of the water.

When to come

The Seahorse swim runs from May to mid-October, weather permitting, and it's the most popular ride of the summer, so it's worth booking ahead. Because so much depends on the sea and the wind, we'll always confirm on the day that conditions are right.

It's the kind of experience people travel to Hydra specifically for, and the kind they talk about long after they've gone home. If you do one ride with us this summer, make it this one.
