Riding Hydra with kids

Some of our favourite riders are the smallest ones. There is a particular look a child gets the first time they sit on a horse and feel it start to walk, a mix of nerves and pure delight, and helping a family share that is one of the best parts of what we do. If you are coming to Hydra with children, here is what to know.

Built for young beginners

Our rides are gentle by design, which makes them a natural first experience for children. The pace is a walk, the ground is familiar to the horses, and a guide leads the way throughout. Children need no experience, and neither do their parents. Most families who ride with us have never been on a horse before.

Safety comes first

We say it often because we mean it. Every young rider is matched with one of our calm, patient horses, the ones who do not mind wriggling, giggling or sudden questions. A guide stays with the group the whole time, and for the youngest riders we keep a hand close. Helmets are provided and fitted before we set off, and parents are welcome alongside.

A family thing to do together

On a car-free island where the days move slowly, a ride is something the whole family can do side by side, with no screens and no rush. Children come away feeling brave, parents come away with photos they will keep, and everyone sees a corner of Hydra they would have walked straight past on foot.

The look on a child's face the first time is the whole reason we do this.

Good to know

Tell us your children's ages when you book so we can plan the right horses and pace. Hats, sunscreen and closed shoes for everyone, and we will take care of the rest.
